My Daily Act :: I made my first trip of the season to the Farmer’s Market. It was a party for all of my senses; the bright colors of fresh, whole food; the aroma of herbs, vegetables, and flowers; the flavorful tidbits of samples; the warmth of the morning sun and the tickle of a cool, gentle breeze.

There are a lot of reasons why shopping at the farmer’s market is good for your health, the health of your community, and our planet. Here are a few reasons to shop at your local farmer’s market:

Produce is picked and sold within hours or a few days (rather than weeks). It’s fresher, more nutrient-dense, and doesn’t require chemicals or wax to keep it looking fresh.

You can talk directly to the growers of your food. You can ask questions about growing practices, as well as get tips for storing and preparing your food.

Most local farmers don’t use the chemicals that commercial growers use. So even if what you buy isn’t organic, it’s more natural.

Your food is safer. E-coli and Salmonella outbreaks usually happen in industrial settings, not on farms.

Your money is going to local farmers rather than large food conglomerates.

Your food has a much shorter transit. It travels across your city or county rather than across the country or world, saving fuel and resources.

It’s a better value. You’ll pay the same or less than what you pay at the grocery store and you’re getting fresher, healthier food.

It’s fun! And when’s the last time you had fun at the grocery store?

My Daily Act :: Last week, I was feeling a little under the weather. I wasn’t as active as I wanted to be because I wasn’t feeling up to it. I didn’t eat as well as I wanted to because I didn’t have the energy to prepare food. I was feeling a little guilty for not taking care of myself. So it was high time to remind myself of my intentions — to accept where I am, listen to my body, honor what I hear and approach all of it with gratitude and love. This journey is a kinder, gentler journey of self-care. I’m grateful for the reminder.

My Daily Act :: Not so long ago, I could barely get off of the couch. If complete exhaustion wasn’t enough, there was one thing that made that low phase of my life even lower – not being able to play, at all. Every day my son would ask me to go outside, or even just to get off the couch to play inside. All I could say was, “I’m sorry, honey. Mommy doesn’t feel good today.” I was afraid, not just that I’d be stuck on that couch for the rest of my life, but even more, that’s what he would remember of me growing up. Now, though, I know I’m feeling better. I know I’m feeling better because now when he asks, I can say, “Sure, let’s go outside and play.” I always knew that my self-care was important. Now I know just how important it is.

My Daily Act :: I was dragging a little bit today… having a hard time focusing and concentrating. In the old days, I would have loaded up on caffeine and sugar to push through. Now that I’m trying to listen to my body instead of overriding it, I knew it wanted sleep, not a super-sugary-coffee drink. So instead, I drank some extra water and snuck in a nap. Yep, I was in between clients so I closed my office door, lowered the blinds, and caught some shut eye. I felt like a kid sneaking candy. Like I was doing something I wasn’t supposed to be doing.

Why should resting be a luxury? Or a weakness? Or laziness? Isn’t it more responsible and courageous to take care of your body by resting when you need it. I believe it is and for me, there is no longer pride in pushing through (this… coming from a former all-nighter pro, surprises even me). As it turns out, I woke up more refreshed and was much more productive for the rest of the day than I would have been.

My Daily Act :: I really can’t remember the last time I layed in the grass (I think there was one time a couple of years ago… ). It seems like I should be doing a thousand other productive things. But the sun was shining, the breeze was mild, and the blanket that had been laid out was beckoning. Just laying there, eyes closed, listening to the sounds all around, feeling the warmth on my skin… breathing it all in. It felt luxurious and free spirited. I could feel the tension I have been holding in my shoulders transfer into the earth, melting away. My breathing slowed and deepened. The corners of my mouth curled slightly upward. If I’d been measuring, I’m sure my pulse and blood pressure decreased. I felt lighter and younger, physically and in spirit. Tell me, what could be more productive than that?
